The signal word is a legal statement, not a design choice.
Each signal word in ANSI Z535.4 has a defined severity meaning and a fixed colour. Using DANGER where WARNING applies dilutes every DANGER sign on the site — and using WARNING where DANGER applies understates a hazard that can kill someone.
The triangle-and-exclamation symbol indicates a personal injury hazard. It belongs on DANGER, WARNING, and CAUTION panels. It does not belong on NOTICE or general safety signs, because those do not describe injury hazards — putting it there is a real, and common, error.
Message panel
Say the hazard, the consequence, and the avoidance.
A sign that reads “HIGH VOLTAGE” tells a worker something they already assumed. A compliant message panel does three jobs: it identifies the hazard, states what will happen, and says what to do instead.
We write to that structure by default. If your safety program has approved wording, we set that instead — consistency across a site matters more than our preferences.

Durability
A faded safety sign is a liability, not a defence.
OSHA 1910.145 requires that signs and tags be legible and maintained in a condition that keeps them legible. In practice this is where most sites fall down: the signs were correct on the day they went up, and nobody looked again for six years.
Safety orange and safety yellow are among the least UV-stable colours in common use. Outdoors in Florida, an economy sign can shift noticeably within a couple of seasons. If a sign lives in sunlight, specify for sunlight — the cost difference is small next to a re-signing program.
